Autumn school “DIALOGUES WITH HEALTH” for phd students

      Autumn school 2020
Program and abstracts Eestikeelne

On November 19-20, 2020 Estonian Literary Museum organises the autumn school “Dialogues with health” in the conference center of Värska Spa (https://spavarska.ee/en/). The autumn school looks at narratives, metaphors, meanings and coping mechanisms related to this highly relevant topic. The event takes place in cooperation with the Graduate School of Linguistics, Philosophy and Semiotics, but other PhD students (e.g. cultural research), their supervisors as well as master’s level students are also warmly welcome.

The lectures and discussions of the autumn school approach the topic of health in a broad and interdisciplinary way: we look at respective language use, belief worlds, emotions, fears, philosophies and lifestyles in the times of epidemics as well as in everyday life, and their cultural, linguistic and semiotic outputs.

In addition to the Estonian researchers several experts from abroad are going to present lectures and workshops, for example: Virginia García-Acosta (Mexico), Thomas Ndaluka (Tanzania), Terhi Utriainen (Finland).

PhD students whose research topic is related to health are welcome to give a 20-minutes paper. Please inform about your interest in presenting a paper by October 16th; in case that you want to participate without a paper, the deadline of registration is November 3rd (please send the filled-in registration form to the address: reet@folklore.ee). Final programme and information about reading materials will be sent by November 10th. Working language is English.

Students can earn 2 credit points (ECTS) for participation or 3 credit points when additionally presenting a paper.

The trip from Tartu to Värska will be organised with a rented bus. All participants are granted food and accommodation, Värska has also nice possibilities for various recreation activities. In case of additional health restrictions, the autumn school will still take place but – based on the situation – in partly or wholly virtual form.

The event is supported by the European Union (ASTRA project of Estonian Literary Museum, EKMDHUM), it is also related to projects CEES and PUTJD962.
